While every effort is made to ensure that the Credit Transfer Service is accurate and up-to-date, transfer course articulations are continually reviewed and adjusted. Therefore, the Credit Transfer Service will give you a general sense of how your credits will transfer to an IU campus; however, you should see an advisor to validate the accuracy and to assess if and how your transfer credit will apply to specific degree programs.
How do I use the CTS?
Start with the dropdown boxes on the left and put in the course information from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended. The “State” dropdown indicates what state your college or university is in. The best practice is to put all of your courses from one college or university at a time before moving to a second one that you may have attended.
What if my courses are not listed?
Not to worry. What that may mean is that you are the first student to transfer that course to IU, and we have not had a chance to evaluate it yet against our own catalog of courses to see if there is a match. This does not mean that it will not transfer. Of course, there is no guarantee that it will.
What If I can’t find my college or university in the CTS?
Not to worry on this either. What that may mean is that you are the first student from your college or university to transfer to the IU campus that you are applying to, and the campus will need to see your courses first to evaluate them and get them into the system.
When I see the way that my courses transfer, will they apply to any degree?
That depends. Courses can transfer to IU without applying to every degree. For example, some degrees do not have a large number of general electives or a degree may expect a particular grade.
What happens with courses that have a grade below a C but that I passed?
The CTS assumes that you have received a C or better in courses that you submit. IU generally will not transfer coursework that has received a grade below a C. There are two exceptions to this, and those are if you are a student from Indiana who has received the Statewide General Education Core (STGEC) Milestone or if you are an Indiana student who has received an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech or Vincennes University within a Transfer Single Articulation Pathway (TSAP). There are some instances within the STGEC and the TSAP’s when IU will accept a passing grade below a C.
Why will some of my courses transfer differently, depending on which campus I go to?
The IU course catalog has over 10,000 courses in it. Over time, each program and discipline on each of the campuses established the courses that best suited the programs for that campus. Therefore, there are times when transfer credit does not match across all of the campuses. Each has determined what is in the best interest for the student at that campus.
What does it mean when the CTS says that the transfer credit has an “UN” indicator or says “UNDISTRIBUTED”?
That simply means that the course that you are transferring does not have a similar course in our system BUT it does count for college credit. It may count toward general education, a general elective, and at times within a degree program. Ask your advisor for information on exactly how undistributed credit will count for you.
Can I appeal the way my courses will transfer?
Once you have been officially admitted to a campus and have had an official audit of your courses and credits, talk to your advisor about any questions that you have with regard to your transfer credit. Advisors can outline the appeal process for you; however, you must be admitted to a campus first.
